Red Cliffs National Conservation Area: Cottonwood Canyon

5.3 miles out and back

3-17-19 to 3-18-19

This was Daniel's first overnight backpacking trip. This trail goes through a canyon the entire way and involves lots of rock walking. It is remote and used by both humans and horses.

It is easy to miss the turn-off for this trail. I recommend the All Trails app to stay on course.

This was a very private hike that meanders through the bottom of a canyon. There are some great places towards the end to drop your pack and scramble to the top of ridges for wonderful overlooks.

Highlights: Privacy. We saw two people on bikes in the beginning, but not a soul after that. There are plenty of spaces to pitch a tent when you are ready. The variety in rocks were awesome! It seems like it would be a great area to bike or ride horses.

Lowlights: You can hear cars from the highway for most of the hike. Walking on the rock beds or seeking the horse trail along the sides get annoying after a while.

Tips: On the way to the entrance, if you need water, there is a truck gas station on the right about 3/4 miles before the entrance. There are a hose and faucet there to fill up.
